Senior Technical Writer

ASSYST is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Writer to join our clients team and support  in Laurel, MD. The successful candidate will collaborate with IT project managers, developers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and end-users to gather accurate information, ensuring that all documentation accurately reflects the functionality and processes of the client’s systems. This role will create high-quality, user-friendly documentation and media, supporting a range of users within the organization.

Job Title: Senior Technical Writer
Location: Laurel, MD (Hybrid - 3 days on-site, up to 2 days remote)

Scope of Work

  • The Senior Technical Writer will be responsible for creating comprehensive, clear, and accessible documentation that supports system functionality and operational needs. Key deliverables include:
  • User Manuals and Operational Guides: Develop user guides, quick reference guides, and operational guides to facilitate system use and maintenance.
  • Training Materials: Create training resources such as brochures and presentations to support user adoption and knowledge transfer.
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Document SOPs for system maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Instructional Videos: Produce instructional videos for varied audiences, aligned with accessibility and quality standards.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produce user guides, SOPs, quick reference guides, training manuals, brochures, and after-action reports.
  • Determine the clearest and most logical ways to present complex information for optimal comprehension.
  • Proofread and refine documents to ensure alignment with grammatical and formatting standards.
  • Collaborate with IT departments to gather and organize documentation in the IT Technical Documentation Repository.
  • Work with video requestors to create video content, ensuring it meets accessibility standards, and upload final media to Microsoft Stream.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Alternatively, 10 years of relevant experience can be substituted for the bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years in a senior technical writing position.
  • Familiarity with AP style guide (Preferred).
  • Experience in developing Statements of Work (SOW) and Requests for Proposals (RFP) (Preferred).
  • Proficiency in technical documentation tools and version control.
  • Understanding of software and project development processes.
  • Ability to format and organize content for ease of understanding and usability.
  • Demonstrated capability in producing clear, concise writing for a range of audiences.
  • Strong editing skills with a solid understanding of style guides and industry best practices.
